The SM6S28ATHE3/I is a bidirectional transil diode with a power rating of 6.6kW. It is intended to protect electrical and electronic systems from over-voltage caused by short-duration pulses such as those due to ESD and other electrical transients. The device is similar to other TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes in that it will shunt the excess voltage away from the protected circuits, thus preventing them from damage.The SM6S28ATHE3/I is a three-lead component, with leads for both power and ground connections. It has an operating voltage range of 6.5V to 43V, with a maximum clamping voltage of 51V. The device also has an extremely fast response time, being able to protect circuits in as little as 0.5 nanoseconds. The SM6S28ATHE3/I offers protection from both ESD and EFT (Electrical Fast Transient) pulses. ESD is the usual cause of short-duration over-voltage pulses, caused by a sudden discharge of static electricity. EFT is usually caused by capacitive or inductive coupling or lightning, and can also cause significant over-voltage transients. The SM6S28ATHE3/I offers excellent protection against both of these types of transients.There are a variety of applications where this diode can be used. For example, it is ideal for use in automotive, industrial, and home electronics, and can provide protection from transient voltage to a variety of sensitive components. It can also be used to provide surge protection for LED drivers and power supplies, as well as a variety of other electronic systems.The working principle of the SM6S28ATHE3/I is based on the behavior of the p-n junction diode. When an over-voltage is applied to the diode, it will begin to conduct. This current will be shunted away from the protected electronic circuits, thus preventing them from being damaged by the voltage spike.
