PMIC(Power Management ICs) are essential components for most embedded systems, providing integrated power management solutions. It takes over many of the givefor_ther controls from multiple individual devices and delivers power management functionality with fewer components, lower component cost and lower power consumption. PMICs usually integrate multiple regulator and devices for advanced energy management. Supervisors are special type of PMICs that monitor system voltages, check system power rails and conditions, and trigger an external reset signal in case of a system fault. They provide a higher level of protection and diagnostics to applications that require robust power management. The SP705IFC is a highly integrated supervisor IC targeting 5Vs tolerant VCC microcontroller applications.

SP705ICF application fields

The SP705ICF is a 5.0V to 6.75V handheld battery-powered device supervisor. It is designed to simplify the power management for microcontroller-based designs that require 5 volts tolerant VCC for system power-on. With the goal of providing robust yet cost optimized devices, the SP705ICF integrates voltage supervisor, voltage monitor, low voltage detector and power-on reset into a single chip. The device is offered in an 8-pin TSSOP package that reduces board size and BOM cost.

SP705ICF working principle

The working principle of the SP705ICF are based on the overall circuit topology. The device has five main components which interact with each other to provide the necessary protection and system monitoring fail-safe. The components consist of the power-on reset (POR), the low voltage detector (LVD), the voltage supervisors, the voltage monitor and the reset and status output logic.

Power-on reset generates a reset signal when logic input voltage rises above the minimum logic \'Off\' voltage and starts the reset timer counting. When the timer reaches the end of its pre-programmed period (tPOR), the reset signal is de-asserted and further integration into the system can take place. Low voltage detector prevents the system from operating under excessive low voltages, by generating an active-low signal when the input voltage falls below the programmed LVD threshold. It is used to prevent the system from operating under non-optimal or unsafe conditions. Voltage supervisors monitor the different power rails in the circuit, in order to check that they stay within their specified operating limits. The voltage supervisor can generate an active-low signal if any of the monitored rail falls below the programmed threshold.

The voltage monitor is used to keep track of the system power rails that might stray above an unsafe level. The comparison between the preset voltage and the voltage monitor level is continuously monitored and if the monitored voltage exceeds the pre-programmed level, the reset and status output logic is activated. The reset and status output logic is used to output the system states and any other related information. The output could be any number of logic levels or signals, depending on the desired use of the device.
