Aluminum electrolytic capacitors use an electrolytic solution as the medium in which the dielectric layer of the capacitor is formed. This medium can be either a traditional electrolyte, such as an aqueous solution, or a solid electrolyte, such as an ionically conducting polymeric gel. These capacitors have an aluminum oxide layer as the dielectric, and an electrolyte which provides the electric field to create the capacitance. The layer of aluminum oxide is formed when the capacitor is charged for the first time.

TE1410 is a type of aluminum electrolytic capacitor which utilizes a solid polymeric electrolyte.
