TL2842DR-8 Application Field and Working Principle
TL2842DR-8 is a DC-DC switching controller belonging to the class of PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circles). It is specialized in voltage regulation and switching applications, of which operating input voltage ranges from - 8.0V to 48.0V. The versatile applications of TL2842DR-8 are centered in step-up, step-down and voltage inverting operations, due to its many built-in enhanced protection functions, e.g. UVLO, OVP etc.

Working Principle
TL2842DR-8 consists of a reference voltage source, an error amplifier, a PWM generator and a high power switch. The DC output voltage is maintained in an accurately level by comparing this output voltage with a fixed reference voltage and exhausting the difference through the error amplifier. The current flowing in a power switch controls the output voltage by acting as a proportional element. When the output voltage becomes greater than the reference voltage, the current signal reaches the limits of the error amplifier and the switching current is reduced, thus the output voltage decreases. On the contrary, when the output voltage is smaller than the reference voltage, the current signal will increase and lead to the voltage stepping-up.
In the TL2842DR-8, feedback is normally carried out through the voltage divider, where R1 (the internal resistance of the device) and R2 (the external feedback resistance) adjust the output voltage level. The analog control loop provides good line and load regulation in addition to low output impedance and fast transient response.
Since the device includes an on-chip comparator circuit it can be operated in a current mode, allowing the user to reduce output noise at the expense of bandwidth and stability. Moreover, low side synchronous rectification can be easily carried out.
