TOP209P is a high-performance AC/DC converter controller IC in the TOPSwitch-HX family from Power Integrations. It offers a wide range of features and benefits, including high efficiency, low standby power, and integrated overcurrent protection. TOP209P is an off-line PWM controller that integrates state-of-the-art functions, providing design versatility and ease-of-use. TOP209P integrates all the necessary components of a PWM switching converter, such as gate drivers, on-board voltage reference, peak current sensing, soft start, and over-temperature protection. As a result, the package size and BOM cost is reduced.

TOP209P can be used to design low power AC/DC converters with output power up to 1.6W. The TOP209P includes an on-board 600V, 4.5A peak gate driver. The High- and Low-side drivers have a 16ns rise/fall times and a VGS threshold of 5V, suitable for level-1 and 2-MOSFETs and IGBTs. Furthermore, the chip has a wide VCC operating range, and is designed to minimize power dissipation in the BVIC. The programmable soft start eliminates inrush current and eliminates any audible noise. The integrated temperature compensated band gap reference source provides high accuracy and is also resistant to temperature changes.

TOP209P implements overcurrent protection using an on-chip current sense amplifier. The amplifier can detect line or load transients, such as a short circuit of the output, and quickly shut down the switching action. It has a maximum peak sensing level of 4V, 18mA which is above the OCP threshold. The OCP threshold level is adjustable; therefore, the designer can customize the system to prevent power overloads on startup.
