The TOP249YN is an integrated, high voltage, high frequency off-line switcher IC designed for use in high efficiency, low power isolated and non-isolated AC/DC switch mode power supplies. It is available in a Wide-Diff 8-lead plastic package.

The device consists of a 16-bit processor core, dedicated peripheral circuits, a High Voltage integrated Power MOSFET, low-loss rectifiers, and a temperature sensing circuit. Integrated protection features include Accurate voltage regulation over line, load, and temperature variations, to ensure stable operation. Additionally, an internal monitoring circuit is provided, as is limited overcurrent shutdown and single event latch up.

The TOP249YN has a noise-suppressing high voltage integrated MOSFET switch and uses Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum Frequency Control to minimize EMI, allowing it to meet stringent EMI susceptibility requirements. The integrated circuit uses a single, low-cost primary winding transformer to generate a regulated output. This eliminates the need for a large, expensive transformer and reduces total system cost.

The integrated circuit supports a wide range of control functions, with flexible power supply design, allowing for a wide range of input voltages and output voltages. A maximum of 3A output current and up to 85Watts of power can be delivered with the IC. Multiple safety features are built into the IC, with DC Fault protection and thermal shutdown.

The high speed and efficient switching system limits the power lost in the on-state operations of the TOP249YN. Intrinsically Safe (IS) operation is also a feature of the device, allowing it to be used in hazardous environments and areas where a wide range of temperatures is present. In operation, the TOP249YN is first started by turning on the start pin which initiates the internal circuitry of the device. When the start command is active, the device then monitors the incoming supply voltage. Once the supply voltage rises to the specified level, the power MOSFET is turned on and the primary windings of the transformer receives current. This current passes through the transformer and generates a voltage at the secondary winding. The voltage generated by the transformer is regulated by the internal circuitry of the device by varying the conduction time of the power MOSFET according to the input and output voltage.

The device combines synchronous rectification with frequency hopping spread spectrum frequency control to reduce power consumption and provide high efficiency. Additionally, the device features 0.2% line regulation, 0.5% load regulation, and a wide temperature operating range of -40°C to 85°C. The TOP249YN is suitable for both cost-sensitive and high-end applications, and offers a great combination of performance and efficiency at a low cost.
