TOP252GN is an off-line PWM switch IC specifically designed for the low-cost and cost-sensitive ac-dc adapter, charger and LED lighting applications. It has built-in input overvoltage protection, output overvoltage and short-circuit protection. The conventional circuit can be easily replaced by this IC, satisfying the requirements of low-cost, small size and low EMI.

The TOP252GN can start up from a wide input voltage range from 87VAC to 264VAC and provide an output voltage from 6V to 264V with a maximum output power of up to 120W. It adopts a power factor correction (PFC) control full-bridge PWM half-bridge topology with constant on-time (COT) control for scalable performance and improved efficiency.

The working principle of the TOP252GN is based on the pulse-width modulation (PWM) control principle. In a power supply system, a DC voltage supply is generated by controlling the duty cycle of an alternating current (AC) wave. The AC wave is modulated by an external source and the on-off time of the PWM signal is determined by the input voltage and output voltage.

When the TOP252GN reaches a predetermined input voltage, the voltage controller switches on the gate of the internal power switch and the pulse width modulated (PWM) pulses start. The pulses are then shaped into a square wave and the PWM pulses start to appear. This PWM output is used to control the output voltage and the current of the power supply system.

The TOP252GN then enters a steady-state and the voltage and the current are maintained at a specific ratio. When the load demand changes, the voltage and the current output can change depending on the system load.
