A primary function of a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is to regulate, control and monitor the power supply of an electronic device. An AC/DC converter is a type of power converter which allows AC power to be converted to DC power and vice versa. An offline switcher refers to a power supply which is designed to provide voltage isolation of the load from the AC mains. The TOP210GN is a PMIC part belonging to the AC/DC converters and offline switchers category and is used for a wide range of applications such as computing, mobile and consumer applications.
TOP210GN is a multi-chip power supply IC from power analog semiconductor manufacturer, Topro. It is a cost-effective and highly reliable integrated power management solution for offline applications with AC mains between 85V and 265V. It provides an output of up to 25W and features a constant-current ligher dimming scheme for LED applications.
The TOP210GN features a GreenPowr Light-Load Country Selection (LL-CS) mode and a PowerWise Idle Mode (IDLE). LL-CS allows the device to detect and select the input voltage range automatically and operate in a light-load and low-power mode if the load is below 17mW and 135mW respectively. IDLE mode provides a low power mode at light-load and no-load conditions. During idle mode, the output voltage of the IC is lowered electro-mechanically, resulting in lower power consumption. Both the LL-CS and IDLE functionality makes the TOP210GN an ideal for standby power applications.
Additionally, the TOP210GN also features loop compensation, short circuit protection, overshoot and overvoltage protection and auto-restart after a fault. It also has an output voltage trimming range of 3.2 to 4.0V and a wide 4:1 input voltage range. This makes the TOP210GN suitable for a range of battery-backed applications, such as low-power portable and cellular applications.
The TOP210GN is built with a high-voltage power MOSFET, output voltage and current sensing circuits, a control circuit and a protection circuit. The integrated high-voltage MOSFET allows for the conversion of AC mains to DC with less power dissipation, resulting in greater efficiency. The output voltage and current sensing circuits sense the output voltage and current levels and pass this information to the control circuit. The control circuit adjusts the output voltage based on the input voltage and the set output voltage to provide a stable and regulated output.
The protection circuit protects the TOP210GN from over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit conditions. In such cases, the protection circuit will limit the output voltage and/or current or shut off the output. This ensures the safety of the end device in the event of an over-current or over-voltage condition.
The combination of LL-CS, IDLE, short circuit protection and a wide input voltage range makes the TOP210GN a suitable solution for AC/DC conversion and offline applications. It is a cost-effective power management solution for consumers, mobile and computing applications that require low-power standby an low-voltage/current operation.
