The TOP221G is a high power AC-DC converter, an offline switcher, which belongs to Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). It provides a very low standby power consumption. This IC includes several functions such as an internal temperature compensation function, an over-temperature protection function and a shut-down function. It supports both continuous current and pulse current operation modes. It features an advanced fixed frequency voltage mode PWM control architecture and incorporates several functions including current-mode PWM control, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, short-circuit protection and cycle-by-cycle current limiting. It utilizes an integrated fault flag feedback mechanism to prevent any functions of the IC from being locked or damaged.The TOP221G implements a low cost, low EMI solution by integrating a unique open loop-current limiting loop instead of a traditional feedback loop for current control. This function reduces EMI and improves the overall stability of the circuit. The power stage consists of two series connected MOSFETs. When the input voltage exceeds the threshold voltage the two MOSFETs start to oscillate at a fixed frequency. The duty cycle of the MOSFETs is determined by the integrated current sensing PWM controller. The TOP221G is capable of accurately controlling the regulated output voltage and maintaining the current output within a certain range. When the input voltage increases, the duty cycle of the power MOSFETs increases and the output voltage decreases.In short, the TOP221G is an outstanding IC offering many features, functions and capabilities exceeding other PMICs in its class.
