TOP242GN is an integrated monolithic off line switcher manufactured by Power Integrations Inc,. which is intended for use in flyback converters. This device is an isolated, current-mode, pulse-width-modulated (PWM) voltage booster featuring high power transfer ratio, wide operating range and high efficiency. It provides superior performance by integrating all the key components for an efficient off line power supply. The device includes MOSFET switches, a power factor correction (PFC) stage, and a flyback PWM controller. It is designed to meet the requirements of Energy Star Level V and Military Standard 810E, etc.

The application fields of TOP242GN include, but not limited to, small to medium-sized off line voltage converters, adapters, inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, and low power switching supplies, such as adapters and power inverters. It has a wide input range with 85VAC to 264VAC. It also can be used to design energy-saving adapters using a variety of topologies. It features high efficiency and low standby power, making it ideal for energy-saving adapter applications.

The main features of TOP242GN include; Zero voltage switching (ZVS), integrated 1.25A high voltage MOSFET switches, maximum duty cycle up to 70%, simplified circuit design and topology selection, under-voltage lockout (UVLO) with hysteresis and skip cycle, fixed-frequency current mode PWM control, over-voltage protection (OVP), soft-start, over-load protection (OLP) and short-circuit protection (SCP). Furthermore, it also provides integrated half-bridge startup/shutdown, precise output voltage regulation, optional Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming control and voltage feed forward.

The working principle of TOP242GN is based on the principles of flyback converter and PWM modulation. Flyback converters are isolated switching regulators that convert an input voltage to a higher or lower output voltage. The design of flyback converters combines the transformer, rectifier/regulator, switch controller and MOSFET switches into a single package, making them a cost effective solution for many power supply applications. The TOP242GN has an integrated PWM modulator with a fixed-frequency current mode PWM control. It is designed such that the lowest switching frequency occurs when the MOSFET is on for the longest time, thus providing a low RDSon operating point. The MOSFET is driven by the PWM modulator to provide the desired output voltage by means of a flyback transformer, which acts as an energy storage device.

The TOP242GN also includes a power factor correction (PFC) stage which helps to improve the efficiency of the power converter by maintaining the voltage-current relationship as constant as possible. The PFC stage consists of an input voltage sensing circuit, an active power factor control circuit, and an output current limiting circuit. The active power factor control is used to eliminate any low frequency voltage harmonics at the input and to provide proper power factor operation. The output current limiting circuit senses the output current and provides protection in case of output over-current conditions.

The TOP242GN is ideal for use in off line voltage converters, adapters, inverters and low power switching supplies, due to its wide input range and efficient performance. Its integrated features provide an easy to design, cost efficient, and reliable power solution. It is a versatile IC, which can be used to design energy-saving adapters with a variety of topologies, and greatly simplifying the development process.
