The TOP245GN is an offline switcher power supply integrated circuit (IC) developed by Power Integrations. It is a highly efficient, off-line cost-effective switching power supply control IC that operates over a wide frequency range. This device features an integrated high-voltage MOSFET, eliminating the need for an external MOSFET or thermal design considerations. This device provides an integrated low-temperature startup circuit, allowing the device to start up from a very low temperature. The TOP245GN is designed to be used as either an AC-DC or DC-DC converter in a broad range of applications, including consumer electronic adapters, chargers, lighting, power supplies, and more.
The TOP245GN has an operating range of 85 to 264V AC and provides regulated output power of up to 20W. This device supports a wide range of operating frequencies from 40 to 100kHz and is capable of nearly 100% efficiency for very high power applications. The TOP245GN also features an integrated over-voltage shutdown feature, providing protection against peak leakage current and over-temperature conditions.
The working principle of the TOP245GN is based on a diagram commonly referred to as a buck or step-down converter. The input power is switched on/off at a predetermined frequency and the output voltage is regulated by a feedback loop. The input power is first rectified and then filtered to produce a DC voltage. A high voltage switching MOSFET is used to convert this DC voltage into a square wave AC voltage. This AC voltage is then converted back to the DC voltage by a full-wave bridge rectifier. The output voltage is then regulated by a feedback loop which compares the output voltage to a fixed reference voltage.
To improve efficiency and reduce power losses, the TOP245GN also incorporates an adjustable frequency version of conventional fixed frequency PWM switching technology. This method utilizes a voltage-sensing feedforward loop to adjust the switching frequency in response to changing line voltages. This reduces the amount of power lost due to power dissipation across the switching MOSFET, improving the efficiency of the converter. The TOP245GN also incorporates an improved line load regulation circuit for improved stability and transient response.
In addition to the high power efficiency provided by the TOP245GN, the device also offers a number of features that make it attractive for use in a wide range of applications. The device has very low start-up current, making it suitable for applications that have limited power supply capacity. The device supports self-starting on loss of AC power and is capable of current derating with temperature, allowing it to be used in a wide range of temperatures. The device has very low EMI, making it suitable for use in sensitive applications.
