The TOP249Y is a member of the TOPSwitch family, a series of high performance, environmentally friendly, off-line switcher ICs from Power Integrations. The device integrates all the power supply components on a single monolithic silicon die and is designed to drive a variety of AC/DC output topologies. It is intended for point-of-load topologies in isolated and non-isolated applications with power levels up to 250W. The TOP249Y is designed to accept an input voltage range of 90 VAC to 264 VAC and is capable of providing output voltages with single or multiple outputs, in a wide range of voltages.
The TOP249Y offers excellent performance, high efficiency, and flexible control characteristics, making it ideal for digitally-controlled power supplies, distributed power systems and green power applications. The TOPSwitch family offers internal MOSFET, leading-edge blanking, soft-start, hiccup over-current protection and other features. The TOP249Y, for example, provides Hiccup Over-current Protection to protect the power supply if it exceeds its design limits.
The main features of TOP249Y include: (1) Low startup current, (2) Low peak surge current, (3) Proprietary LEB technology, (4) Flexible operation modes, (5) Targetable off-time to reduce EMI, (6) Frequency jittering, (7) Variable frequency, (8) Adaptive on-time control, and (9) Over-temperature protection. In addition, the TOP249Y also has Hiccup Over-current Protection to protect the power supply and meet UL60950-1 requirements.
The TOP249Y is capable of targeting a specific off-time to reduce EMI and has frequency jittering to further reduce EMI and harmonics. This feature is particularly valuable in meeting the stringent European EMI standards. The device also has a programmable soft start feature to reduce in-rush current, while Adaptive On Time Control ensures that the converter runs at the optimum performance point. Furthermore, the TOP249Y has adjustable UV/OV/OT protection that disconnects the load in the event of any of these conditions. The device also features a wake-up mode which reduces energy consumption.
The TOP249Y has the advantages of high efficiency, low standby power, and low emission. It is designed to reduce thermal stress and resists the effects of aging, making it ideal for space constrained applications. Furthermore, to reduce bill-of-materials, the TOP249Y also integrates the heater winding, eliminating the need for a separate transformer for the two winding designs.
