The popularity and usage of AC-DC and switched-mode power supplies have gained immense attention. The design of power supplies has become critical and integrated into essential electronics. Furthermore, developments in topologies and components have enabled highly efficient, compact and reliable power supplies. The TOP260EG as an example is such a device, it is an AC-DC converter optimized to provide low cost, high efficiency and high performance all at the same time.

The TOP260EG is a basic monolithic power supply, an internally compensated current-mode PWM controller which is suitable for off-line power supplies, such as battery chargers, and adapters. The working principle of the TOP260EG is as follows:

The TOP260EG is a current mode PWM controller that employs a loop regulation of the output voltage. The internal circuit consists of both a voltage and temperature compensation loop to enable its accurate operation. This circuitry allows the controller to provide accurate results while minimizing its size.

The TOP260EG uses an external sensing resistor to monitor output current. The sensing resistor senses the voltage drop when the current passes through the resistor. This voltage signals is then compared with the voltage signal from the internal reference voltage for the set point (default output voltage) and the externally adjusted output voltage to maintain the output voltage regulation.

The internal current sensing circuit is closely coupled to the output voltage of the device. This helps to reduce EMI noise and also helps to maintain stability. When the output current load increases, the voltage feedback signal is used by the device to adjust the internal MOSFET to maintain the output voltage at the set point.

In addition, the TOP260EG also provides over-voltage protection (OVP) on the output voltage. If the output voltage rises beyond the OVP threshold, the device quickly shuts down the internal MOSFET and protects the output from surges.
