The TOP261LN is an improved version of the original TOP261. This versatile family of ICs is used in power supplies, UPS systems, and any application that needs a buck (step-down) or boost (step-up) converter. It is also suitable for switched-mode power supply (SMPS) network applications, adjustable output voltage systems, and as a building block for other AC-DC and DC-DC applications.
This IC is designed for high-efficiency and accuracy, offering an output voltage accuracy of ±2.5% (in skip-mode) and ripple rejection of 78 dB. It also includes integrated current-mode controllers and loop compensation components, along with Over-Current Protection (OCP), Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) and internal temperature-sensing options that make it perfect for use in a wide range of AC-DC and DC-DC applications.
The TOP261LN can be operated in buck, boost, inverting, skip-mode, and quasi-resonant modes. In buck mode, the input (primary) and output (secondary) power stages are configured in an H-bridge configuration. The output voltage is controlled by the ON/OFF control signal applied to the IC\'s primary power stage. During operation, the input voltage and current are monitored, and when an over-voltage or over-current condition is detected, the IC will shut down and enter a safe operational mode.
In boost mode, the operation is the same as for buck mode, except the input and output power stages are configured in a bridge configuration. The output voltage is also adjusted using the ON/OFF control signal applied to the IC\'s primary power stage. The power stages in this configuration provide higher voltage conversion levels, allowing systems to achieve even more wattage in more complex designs.
The TOP261LN also supports a Skip-Mode operating mode which is useful when a high power conversion efficiency is required. In this mode, the output power stage is turned off during the OFF time, allowing most of the power to be directed to the load instead of being dissipated as heat. Additionally, this mode improves the overall performance of the system by providing higher efficiency levels and tighter output voltage accuracy.
For efficiency needs, the TOP261LN can also be equipped with a quasi-resonant mode which utilizes switching frequencies that are lower than the standard in buck or boost mode. Lower switching frequencies reduce the output voltage ripple, allowing for even tighter voltage regulation. Additionally, the lower switching frequency reduces switching losses, providing even greater power savings.
The TOP261LN are also suitable for use in offline switchers, where the uncontrolled input voltage varies from mains to battery power. It provides excellent dynamic response over a wide range of input voltage, with no additional components required. It has a start-up delay of 5ms and a shutdown time of 4ms.
The TOP261LN is available in either a standard 8-pin PDIP or a SOIC8-pin package. It has a wide input voltage range of 15V-38V, a continuous output current up to a maximum of 8A and an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It is ideal for use in industrial, automotive and consumer applications such as LED lighting, motor control, medical equipment and any application where a buck or boost converter is required.
