TOP261YN application field and working principleTOP261YN is a member of TOPSwitch-JX family ICs from Power Integration. It offers highly efficient offline power supplies design up to 10W. TOP261YN utilizes mixed-mode technology which combines a quasi-resonant topology for higher light load efficiency, with a critical conduction mode (CRM) for improved stability and higher efficiency of the power supply. The main applications of TOP261YN are in offline console power supplies, entry-level adapter/chargers, LED lighting, surveillance cameras and other types of consumer applications. The universal input voltage range and the integrated high voltage architecture enable the design of mains-dependent products across multiple markets.TOP261YN features include a typical 86% efficiency, 1.9mH minimum primary inductance, 20µA hibernation current and greater than 55Vdc DRAIN to case voltage. It is housed in a miniature DIP7 package for low-cost assembly and make it suitable for multiple cost-sensitive consumer applications.
TOP261YN circuits basically work with two operating states: Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) and Critical Conduction Mode (CRM). During DCM operation, the controller always starts in DCM, switching at a variable frequency depending on the load conditions. In the light load condition, the frequency is higher and when the current threshold is exceeded, it goes back to a fixed 90kHz frequency. During DCM operation, primary current flow is always high; therefore the efficiency and power dissipation can be high.
When the MOSFET is on and current reaches a certain threshold, the switching converter goes in CRM operation in which the converter switches at a fixed 90kHz frequency, as long as the MOSFET remains on. The drain current will then follow a triangular waveform, thus having a much lower peak value than DCM. The switching times become independent from load variations; therefore the converter can provide excellent load regulation for all the load conditions.
The combination of DCM and CRM significantly improves the efficiency and output voltage line regulation, as compared to conventional solutions. This ensures optimum performance and reduced power loss over the entire load range. In addition, the continuous current limitation also helps to maintain a high efficiency at low power, preventing any problems due to severe conduction with unexpectable load variations.
