TOP266VG Application Field and Working Principle
TOP266VG is a high-performance switching current mode Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller primarily developed for low power off-line switching power supply applications.It provides the necessary features to implement low cost and high performance off-line switcher applications with minimal external components.This controller includes accurate current mode PWM control, over current shut-down protection, over voltage protection, operating frequency adjustment, stand-by/hiccup mode, as well as other features to provide high performance solutions.

Working Principle
TOP266VG uses an internal zero crossing comparator and a leading-edge blanking circuitry to detect the mains voltage waveform for efficient power conversion. When the waveform crosses zero, the Power MOSFET is triggered ON and inductance starts to build the energy from the AC line. A frequency oscillator is used to control the ON time of the device until the requested peak current is met. The resulting waveform is then compared against the sensed output voltage waveform with an adjustable voltage loop. The oscillator frequency, current limiter and voltage loop are carefully calibrated to minimize the total losses in the system. When the set peak current/voltage is reached, the waveform is compared against the zero-crossing comparator and the MOSFET is switched OFF.
TOP266VG offers four modes of protection against overloads, short circuit and overvoltage conditions. First, there is an adjustable peak current limiter that protects the power stage against over-current conditions. Second, internal power supply overvoltage protection keeps the power stage protected from an overload greater than the rated voltage. Third, it also provides over temperature protection to protect the power stage from a temperature greater than the rated temperature. Finally, it also offers a manual shut-off or auto-restart feature which can be used to shut the device down or restart the device in case of a detected fault.
