Power factor correction, or PFC, has become an ever-increasingly important technology due to its ability to improve power efficiency in various applications. The UCC38050D is a Power Factor Correction (PFC) integrated circuit that is designed to meet the stringent requirements of modern power conversion applications which require high-efficiency and high-power density. This device is one of the latest in the Universal Converter Interface (UCI) family of power ICs from Texas Instruments (TI).
The UCC38050D is primarily used in digital and power electronics applications, such as off-line AC/DC power supplies, including personal computers, server power supplies, as well as adapter technology. It simplifies board design, reduces component count and eliminates external compensation which further enhance overall system efficiency and board size.
This IC is designed to provide an efficient and highly integrated power factor corrected active input power factor correction solution. It is based on a single-stage single-switch power converter design, which is configured as a current-mode buck-like converter. It produces an input line-voltage autonomous current-limited “standby” source based on a peak-current control loop. The integrated gate driver switching device is used to provide the high-current needed by the power converter, with a maximum external operating frequency of 350kHz. It also includes integrated protection setpoints for over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature protection.
The UCC38050D provides superior power factor correction performance with a volumetric power efficiency of up to 98%. It operates within a wide input voltage range from 6V to 420V without external components, and also supports high power factor and efficiency across a wide range of AC line input voltages, as well as low standby power dissipation. It also provides for low input current distortion to meet the stringent IEEE-683 standard, maximum peak current limit sensing, and has an adjustable soft start feature.
The IC also contains integrated high-performance diagnostics which allow protection to be implemented if the system operates outside of its normal operating parameters. This makes it well-suited for server or multi-outlet power supply applications, as well as adapter and consumer electronic products. The built-in protection setpoints have a range of adjustable start and end levels that can be configured to protect the system from an over voltage condition.
The UCC38050D also includes a number of other features that make it an ideal choice for power conversion applications. These include multiple pre-bias start-up modes, which can be used to start the system even when the input is at a very low level, as well as low-power mode which shuts down the device when no load is present. It also features selectable hysteretic and peak-current power factor correction, comprehensive protection, and operates at a high frequency of up to 350kHz.
