Aluminum Electrolytic CapacitorsAluminum electrolytic capacitors are energy storage electrochemical devices. They are well-suited for filtering and DC-coupling applications in various demanding industrial and consumer products. The UKW2A221MHD series is a new, high-performance radial-lead capacitor product line available from various manufacturers that delivers higher capacitance, temperature endurance and ripple current ratings. The capacitors also have low contact resistance and low inductance values, so they can handle higher frequencies of energy with ease.The UKW2A221MHD series is typically used in the fields of telecommunication, automotive, computer, medical and audio/video applications amongst others. As a consequence of their robust construction and high ripple current ratings, these radial-lead aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be used in power supplies and voltage regulator circuits. Their size, shape and electrical specifications make them compatible with both switch-mode power supply (SMPS) and linear power supply (LPS) applications.The capacitors consist of a cylinder-shaped aluminum can with brass ends, a cylindrical wound anode attached to the brass end, a solid-film-coated electrolyte that acts as the cathode, an impregnated paper separator, and a snap-in, threaded or pressure-fitted center terminal. The tail electrodes and connection wires ensure reliable wiring to the center terminal. A relatively simple working principle is behind these capacitors. When a voltage is applied across the device’s electrodes, electrical charge flows from the anode to the cathode and creates an energy storage area between the two electrodes. This process is known as dielectric charging and creates an electric field across the device’s dielectric that causes the capacitance of the device. High capacitances can be achieved due to the flat geometry of their wound anodes and their large cathode surface area. The aluminum cans help to contain the high temperatures created by the stored current and it improves the capacitor’s overall durability by reducing the chance of shorting. Additionally, the case material of aluminum also helps to store the charge and discharge energy. The UKW2A221MHD series is also engineered to support a wide range of power applications. These capacitors offer a high capacitance range of 120µF to 33,000µF, an operating temperature range of -40C to +105C, and various options for capacitance tolerance and voltage ratings.
