The MAX5947BESA+ is a voltage peak- and average-current limiter IC in Hot-Swap applications. It provides inrush current and dynamic overcurrent control or load disconnection in Hot-Swap applications and synchronous rectifier-based supplies. The MAX5947BESA+ is equipped with an internal current-sense amplifier (CSA) capable of detecting current from a wide range of transformers, integrated magnetics, and power MOSFETs. This device includes an integrated driver for a hot-swappable power-MOSFET device and works across a wide 5-V to 30-V input range. It includes protection against overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent conditions.
The MAX5947BESA+ Hot Swap Controllers support a wide range of Hot-Swap applications, from desktop/server applications to telecom applications. It is able to provide both current limiting and dynamic current control with fast response time. The MAX5947BESA+ comes with an internal voltage regulator, enabling it to operate in the range of the +2.3 V to +3.3 V system supply. The integrated current sense amplifier ensures accurate current measurement in the 5 V to 30 V input range.
The working principle of the MAX5947BESA+. Hot Swap Controllers can be described as follows. The internal voltage regulator, which works between +2.3 V and +3.3 V supply, is used to provide the +5 V reference voltage that sets the limits of the current limiting function. The internal current-sense amplifier (CSA) measures the current in the load, which is then compared to the +5 V reference voltage. If the load current exceeds the +5 V reference, the indicator output (EN) pin will turn OFF, which will turn off the Hot-Swap MOSFET and disconnect the load.
The MAX5947BESA+ Hot Swap Controllers also include an integrated driver for a hot-swappable power MOSFET device. This driver ensures a faster and more reliable turn-on to the MOSFET and a fast turn-off from the MOSFET in case of an overcurrent/overvoltage event. The MAX5947BESA+ also includes protection against overvoltage and undervoltage conditions. The device can detect a higher than normal voltage applied to the input and will immediately disconnect the load from the input supply. It is also able to detect an undervoltage condition and respond accordingly by turning OFF the hot-swappable MOSFET if necessary.
The MAX5947BESA+ is a very versatile Hot Swap Controllers and is suitable for a wide range of load discconection and current-limiting applications. It has a fast response time and can quickly react to changes in the input or load currents. It is also capable of limiting both peak and average currents, which is ideal for applications that require precise current limiting results. The integrated MOSFET driver ensures a robust turn on/off operation and its protection features ensure safe operation in a variety of situations.
