The BC 818-25 E6327 is a NPN Bipolar Transistor. This transistor is used as a switch to allow current to flow from the collector to the emitter. Its application typically is for switching power supplies, amplifiers, and other low power applications. The BC 818-25 E6327 has a maximum breakdown voltage of 60V and a current gain hFE of 250-600 for the standard device and 400-1000 for the high gain version. It has a maximum c-e voltage of 30V and can withstand up to 3A collector current. It is also fairly simple to use, as it only requires 4 pins for connection.
The working principle of the transistor is based on current flowing through the base which in turn gives rise to an amplification effect in the collector current. When the base-emitter voltage is below 0.7V in the forward direction, due to the high value of current gain, the collector current will increase even at relatively small variation in base current. This amplification effect is called amplified current gain or hFE. The collector voltage (VCE) remains constant when base current is either zero or a constant value.
The normally-off or normally-closed operation of the BC 818-25 E6327 is based on the voltage biasing of the base-emitter junction. This is done by connecting the base and emitter together and then slowly increasing the voltage until the transistor\'s base-emitter voltage (VBE) reaches the "threshold voltage" of 0.7V. At this point, current starts to flow from the base to the collector and the transistor is considered in its "on" state where collector current is controlled by the base current. This “normally-off” or “normally-closed” operation helps minimize spikes in current and voltage that can occur in circuits.
The BC 818-25 E6327 transistor is ideal for use when a simple switch is needed to control current and voltage in low power applications.
