BCX52 and BCX115 transistors are part of a family of medium-power, NPN, silicon-based transistors. They can be categorized as single, bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). This article briefly explains the types of applications for BCX52 and BCX115, their differences and their main working principles.

BCX52 and BCX115 transistors are used in a variety of applications, but are mostly utilised for switching and amplifying purposes. For example, they have been successfully utilised in applications such as intercom systems, speech recognition and synthesiser designs, and transistor oscillators.

The main difference between the two types of transistors lies in the power level that each of them can sustain. The BCX52 is rated at a maximum power level of 3 watts while the BCX115 is rated at a maximum power level of 8 watts.

BCX52 and BCX115 are also differentiated by their pin counts. The BCX52 has an absolute maximum ratings current of 1.5 amperes with a minimum collector-emitter voltage of 25 volts, while the BCX115 has an absolute maximum collector-emitter voltage rating of 60 volts and a maximum current rating of 6 amperes.

The main working principle relates to the current travelling through the transistor. This current is the result of a bi-directional, or ‘push-pull’ transition, caused by positive and negative bias voltages that flow through the transistor’s capacitor. As the voltage level of the bias voltages changes, the current through the transistor changes and causes the transistor to act as either an amplifier or switch.

Depending on the intended application and design of the circuit, BCX52 and BCX115 can be used as either amplifier and/or switches. A typical use of these transistors in amplifier applications involves employing them to ensure the operation of pick-up coils, drivers and pre-amps amongst many other applications.

In order to use BCX52 and BCX115 as switches, a junction between two of their terminals is required. This junction can be opened and closed by varying the bias voltages, thus allowing signals to pass through when open, and cutting them off when closed.

Overall, BCX52 and BCX115 can be considered versatile transistors that can serve different applications, depending on the circuit design they are implemented in. As such, they have become widely utilised in many audio systems, amplifiers and switching devices.
