The BFL4001 is a high power, high current MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor). This type of transistor is a type of unipolar transistor—a device with a single electron “flow”—that is ideal for switching, high-speed data transmission, robust applications, and radio-frequency (RF) applications.
As an N-channel MOSFET (NMOS) transistor, the BFL4001 behaves in a very predictable manner. It is a high-power and high-current device, capable of switching upwards of 4A of DC current at a voltage of up to 45V. However, when the gate-source voltage is raised above the threshold voltage, the electric field between the gate and the channel is strong enough to turn the transistor “on” and allow current to flow. This voltage-controlled field-effect switching is known as a depletion mode.

It is commonly used as a switch to either turn motors on and off, or to regulate the output voltage from a DC-DC converter.
