The BFL4001 is a high power, high current MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor). This type of transistor is a type of unipolar transistor—a device with a single electron “flow”—that is ideal for switching, high-speed data transmission, robust applications, and radio-frequency (RF) applications.

As an N-channel MOSFET (NMOS) transistor, the BFL4001 behaves in a very predictable manner. It is a high-power and high-current device, capable of switching upwards of 4A of DC current at a voltage of up to 45V. The BFL4001 features a max on resistance of 0.007Ω at its peak operation, and its gate-to-source capacitance is lower than 10pF when operating above 70mV at its threshold voltage. As with any MOSFET, the BFL4001 utilizes an electric field to control the flow of current between the source and drain terminals. However, when the gate-source voltage is raised above the threshold voltage, the electric field between the gate and the channel is strong enough to turn the transistor “on” and allow current to flow. This voltage-controlled field-effect switching is known as a depletion mode.

The BFL4001 is intended for use as a single, low-power switch in a wide variety of applications. It is commonly used as a switch to either turn motors on and off, or to regulate the output voltage from a DC-DC converter. In addition, it is used as a switch in power management circuits, as it is capable of switching large amounts of current with relatively low gate charge.
