Thyristors - TRIACsThe BTA06-800CRG is a Thyristor device from STMicroelectronics\' TRIAC series of products. This new device is used in a wide variey of applications ranging from high power switching and motor control to lighting and power control applications. TRIAC devices, also known as triode thyristors, are an integral component in any control system that requires a high voltage, high current, high performance bidirectional ON/OFF switch. In a nutshell, TRIAC devices function as an AC switch. The TRIAC\'s working principle is best explained as a three-stage operation made up of a breakdown stage, a hold-on stage, and a turn-off stage.The breakdown stage of TRIAC operation occurs when the supply voltage reaches a certain level and strikes the anode. The current then starts flowing through the main terminal. As this process occurs, the anode voltage increases the resistance and the current ultimately drops off again, thereby allowing the anode voltage to decreas to its start value.The second stage of TRIAC operation is the hold-on stage. In this stage, once current has started flowing, the gate voltage is increased to the trip level, allowing the TRIAC to remain in a closed state. This is an important stage as it allows the device to remain in an on state even after the voltage has been produced. Additionally, the gate voltage will automatically reduce to the hold-on level, allowing the device to remain in an on state even once the voltage has been removed.The third and final stage of TRIAC operation is the turn-off stage. As current begins to move through the main terminal, the current rises until reaching the device\'s trip value. This is when the gate voltage is stepped down, thereby turning off the TRIAC and breaking the circuit. This process is key in ensuring that the TRIAC device doesn\'t continue to pass current after the gate voltage has been removed.The BTA06-800CRG is an ideal device for a variety of applications.
