Thyristors, also called thyristors or thyristor switches, are electrically operated switches comprising four layers of alternating semiconductor materials - p-n junctions. The name of the thyristor may be derived from the combination of two words - "thyratron" and "transistor". Thyratrons are an older type of switch, whereas transistors are solid-state switches.
