Once the device is triggered, the current in the anode-cathode connection will continue to flow unless the control gate is switched off.

The control gate has two functions. First, it acts as an electrode to control the current flow. Second, its insulated gate prevents unwanted current flow to and from the electrodes. When the control gate is triggered, an electric field appears between the gate and cathode, allowing a current to flow from the gate to the cathode and then to the anode. This is called "triggering". The gate can be triggered either by providing a voltage to the gate or by reducing the voltage on the gate.

Once the device is triggered, current flow from the anode to the cathode will not be interrupted until the reverse gate voltage (or gate trigger voltage) is applied, thus allowing the device to be turned off. The reverse gate voltage has a direct impact on the turning-off characteristics of the BTA08-400BRG. When the reverse gate voltage reaches the holding current level (also known as static threshold point), the current begins to reduce rapidly and the device turns off.
