IR2101S Application Field and Working Principle

IR2101S is an integrated high/low-side driver used as a gate driver in power management integrated circuit (PMIC) applications. It is designed especially for low-side gate drive applications over a wide operating temperature range, which features up to 500kHz switching frequency, low ON-resistance, high-voltage start-up capability and low-power drain.

Application Field

IR2101S can be broadly applied in devices with voltage field-effect transistors (VFETs) or voltage MOSFET (VMOSFETs) such as adjustable DC-DC converters, DC-AC inverters, Central Processing Units (CPUs), and other power management circuits. The most significant application of IR2101S is low-side gate drive applications. It is typically used in power circuits as an interface between the controller and the power transistor. It is essential to these systems because it adds an extra layer of insulation for the power transistor.

Working Principle

IR2101S mainly consists of two components, the high-side gate driver and the low-side gate driver. The high-side gate driver is used to drive the gate of the upper MOSFET, while the low-side driver drives the gate of the lower MOSFET. When a logic signal is applied to its inputs, it turns the high/low-side device on or off and switches between the two operations depending on the logic level applied. It also has internal protection against short circuits, overcurrent and over-temperature. To ensure proper operation, the gate oxide must be able to withstand the voltage applied to it. For this, IR2101S uses an internal high-voltage start-up, which allows the gate oxide to be protected while providing fast and accurate switching. The VIN, VLOGIC and VDD pins are used to supply the correct voltage levels to the driver, while the output tracks the inputs, allowing for fast and accurate switching. In a MOSFET gate drive application, the turn-on time of a device is determined by its gate resistance, gate capacitance and gate voltage, while the turn-off time is determined by the device\'s body diode current and drain voltage. With IR2101S, the gate capacitance is minimized, allowing for faster turn-on and turn-off times. Furthermore, the driver can be programmed to provide a specific current for faster switching without the need for any external components.
