IR2136 Application Field and Working PrincipleIR2136 belongs to power management integrated circuit (PMIC) - Gate Drivers family and is a high voltage, high speed, self-oscillating gate driver with reinforced output levels that can drive power MOSFETs in high power AC/DC converters. It is the ideal gate driver for fractional horsepower induction motor drive applications and full power applications. The IR2136 is a fully integrated high-performance gate driver designed to increase the power and reliability of power MOSFETs used in power conversion applications. It is designed to be used in a variety of high power AC/DC converters including universal motor, permanent magnet, and series wound motor drives. It has several features designed to ensure reliable operation and low switching power losses, including over-current protection, over-temperature protection, over-voltage protection, and under-voltage protection. The IR2136 is a two-channel gate driver providing two independently controlled outputs for high side and low side MOSFETs. Each output can be independently controlled by a PWM controller, analog or digital input. The high side output features a built-in charge pump circuit providing a high output source or sink current of up to 4A. The IR2136 is a high voltage, high speed, self-oscillating gate driver with reinforced output levels that can drive power MOSFETs in high power AC/DC converters. The low side output has a gate drive voltage up to 20V, allowing the full utilization of modern high voltage MOSFETs to allow more design flexibility. The IR2136 has several features designed to increase power efficiency and performance while reducing system design complexity. These features include an auto-restart function, which provides an adjustable time limit to recover after an overcurrent or over-temperature event, as well as built-in pre-biasing and schottky diode protection to prevent runaway current. The IR2136 is also protected against audible noise generation due to its boosted gate outputs, and also incorporates short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown circuitry. The direct connection of the gate to the source terminal of the MOSFET enables a low parasitic input capacitance and further reduces power losses. The IR2136 also supports fast switching times for high speed PWM or frequency-shift control. The driver can be used with a wide range of input voltages, from 2.5V to 16V. The IR2136 is ideal for applications such as variable speed drives, AC/DC converters, pc power supplies, lighting control applications, and general-purpose power conversion. In power conversion applications, the driver can help reduce the switching losses associated with typical high power converters.
