Gate drivers are important devices to control power transistors in power electronic circuits. They are used to provide precise signal isolation and input/output ac current threshold isolation to reduce signal losses and electrical noise. The IR2105S MOSFET driver is an advanced, fixed frequency, step-up controller dedicated to boost topology applications up to 24V. It features low gate charge, low gate threshold voltage, low Start-up & Quiescent Current (Iq) and low Operating Current (Iop). It also features soft start, adjustable output current limits, and soft entry/exit of power stages. The power stage is usually composed of two power MOSFETs, one is p-type and the other one is n-type.

The IR2105S has four main application fields in power electronics. The first is for DC/DC Step-Up Converters. These converters are used to increase the voltage from an input of 12V or 24V to higher outputs for various loads or for other DC-to-DC converters. The IR2105S can be used to step up the voltage from the input stage to the output stage, ensuring precise switching and very low sleep current. Its unique adaptive dead time adjustment feature offers a low oscillation compensation loop, thereby improving the system efficiency.

The second is for DC/DC Step-Down Converters. These converters are used to reduce the voltage from an input of 12V or 24V to lower outputs for various loads or for other DC-to-DC converters. The IR2105S is capable of switching frequency up to 1MHz and ensures fast response to voltage changes and precise switching. Its adaptive on-time technique adjusts the switching frequency and the current limit-programmable operating frequency in a wide range, to ensure a fast response and a precise output voltage adjustment.

The third application field for the IR2105S is for AC-DC Battery Chargers. The IR2105S provides a fast and precise switching with a low inductor peak current as well as a programmable frequency from 16.8kHz to 200kHz. Its floating gate drives feature high gate charge, low gate threshold voltage, positive temperature coefficient and precise control of the gate turn-off.

The fourth application field is for Haptic Motors. Haptic motors are electromechanical mechanisms driven by electric signals that generate vibrations for haptic feedback. The IR2105S’s precise high frequency switching and low Rds(-on) ensure efficient and fast response haptic feedback. The IR2105S also features an enhanced soft start that reduces the system’s inrush current, resulting in a improved system efficiency.

The IR2105S works through a boost topology and its basic operating principle is relatively straightforward. In supporting the boost topology, the IR2105S utilizes an integrated H-Bridge driver to enable the two power applications: one for the step-up and one for the step-down. The circuit is closed by the onboard MOSFETs, which have a low gate threshold voltage and gate capacitance, providing excellent switching performance. The step-up side utilizes the additional winding of the inductor connected to the output voltage, while the step-down side utilizes the power FET connected at the input voltage. The IR2105S drives the gate of the power MOSFET with a high magnitude of current, charging and discharging it to cause the rapid changes in the waveform output. The result is a fast and precise waveform output.
