Integrated circuits (ICs) have been around for decades, and it has been only recently that their capabilities have really begun to be understood and explored. The technology of a modern IC has improved greatly over the last few years, and this has greatly increased the application fields and working principles of some ICs. IR2109 is an example of one such IC that has a growing array of uses and has much potential within various application fields.
IR2109 is an integrated gate driver designed by IR (Infrared). It is a highly integrated power electronic IC which can work reliably in arbitrary application fields. The IC is designed for use with a variety of voltage levels, and is suitable for controlling the motor current, like motor drives, inverters, relays, and so on. The main function of the IR2109 is to turn transistors on and off. The transistors can be of two types: high-side and low-side, and are responsible for switching power. The low-side transistors can be controlled directly by either a gate or a source. Meanwhile, the high-side transistors require signals from the IR2109 gate driver. The gate drivers are responsible for generating the signal that selectively activates the high-side transistors. The gate driver also provides protection by limiting maximum power dissipation and current consumption to safe levels.
The working principle of the IR2109 is based on MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors) or IGBTs (insulated gate bipolar transistors). The Gate Driver has a Schottky diode connected between the gate output and the ground. This diode provides protection for the transistor against the back EMF generated when switching the gate. The MOSFETs or IGBTs are connected in parallel to the switch, and there is also a high-side driver for controlling the connection between the high-side and low-side transistors. This configuration allows for switching from high to low voltages.
What also makes the IR2109 unique is its ability to discern between a switching input source and an external PWM source. By sensing its own voltage level, the IC can automatically adjust its internal protection settings and can quickly respond to external signals. In addition, the IR2109 contains a temperature alarm which can be used to alert the user to possible temperature problems.
The IR2109 is an extremely versatile integrated gate driver which has applications in many different fields. Its ability to interface with MOSFETs and IGBTs, and its ability to sense its own voltage level allow for its application in DC-DC converters, motor drives, and other power electronic applications.
