IR2125 is a high and low side driver for many different kinds of power management and gate driver applications, such as MOSFET, IGBT, BJT, and Triacs. It can control voltage from 5 V to 20 V and ground referenced load current from 18 A peak. The power dissipation of the device is up to 7 watts. This device is often used in applications like home appliances, motor control, battery chargers, and UPSs.
The IR2125 contains two independent high side drivers and two independent low side drivers. The low side drivers are used to switch the common emitter between ground and the output voltage. The high side drivers are used to switch the common emitter between the output voltage and Vdd. This device is capable of running with either a PWM or Linear modes. Both modes require active control of the low side drivers and the high side drivers. For PWM, each side of the circuit is toggled independently with the same period, usually at least several hundred microseconds. In linear mode, each side of the circuit is connected in series and the voltage at the output can be adjusted by varying the duty cycle of the high side drivers.
The IR2125 features the important voltage turn-off protection, where both the high side and the low side drivers are disabled in the event of an overvoltage condition. This allows for safe operation of the device and further protects the system from catastrophic failure. The device also features adjustable deadtime, allowing the user to control the turn-on overlap between the low and high side drivers. The output deadtime can range from 0 μs to 7.5 μs, allowing for various application demands. Additionally, the device features fault feedback from the primary side, allowing the user to select a fault protection mode, as well as set a time delay before the low side drivers are disabled in case of a fault.
The IR2125 provides a thermal protection system that helps to prevent overheating of the device. The device is designed to shut off when the internal temperature sensor senses a temperature beyond the thermal shutdown threshold. This prevents damage to the external components as well as to the device itself. The thermal shutdown protection is activated as soon as the die temperature exceeds the programmed threshold.
