The ISL62872HRUZ-T is a cost-effective DC-DC switching controller from Intersil’s “GreenPay” family of products. It is designed for voltage regulators which need the highest levels of efficiency, performance, and flexibility when operating in low power, small footprint applications. This versatile power management IC (PMIC) offers a variety of features such as wide input voltage range, low quiescent current, fast transient response and synchronous rectification.

Typical application fields of ISL62872HRUZ-T are, among other consumer and industrial electronics, digital products with various microprocessors and digital signal processors, storage systems, and embedded systems. The device is also suited for 5V and 12V entry-level servers and other consumer-oriented applications that require high power density.

The IC operates in either Burst Mode, or forced continuous (FC) mode. In Burst Mode, the IC automatically enters and exits the power saving mode depending on the load demand. In FC mode, the IC does not enter the power saving mode, but reduces power consumption with the Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) technique. Operating between 2.5V and 5.5V, the ISL62872HRUZ-T allows for wide input voltage range for efficient load step response.

The ISL62872HRUZ-T consists of several types of circuit blocks, each with its own respective function. The primary blocks consist of the Voltage Mode PWM Controller, the built-in FOSC oscillator, and the low voltage sense amplifier. There is also a current sense circuit and an external voltage reference circuit. The PWM controller circuits generate PWM pulses with regulated switching frequency and duty cycle based on the input data. The oscillator is a fixed frequency operating circuit which allows the output voltage to be regulated with constant switching frequency.

The low voltage sense circuit consists of a low voltage reference source and a comparator, which generates a switching signal based on the input voltage and the output voltage. The current sense circuit provides a reference current of 1µA for the comparison of an external current sense resistor voltage with the fixed voltage. The reference voltage is provided by either an external voltage or the internal voltage reference circuit.

In ISL62872HRUZ-T, the output voltage is proportional to an external feedback voltage, which determines the output voltage to be in regulation. Furthermore, it has an external voltage or an internal voltage reference circuit, which is used as an offset reference voltage for the comparison with the feedback voltage. Consequently, the PWM comparator outputs a pulse width modulated signal which indicates the duty cycle of the PWM pulse.
