ISL61853BCRZ-T belongs to Intersil’s Hot Swap Controllers and is a member of its PMIC family, designed to protect load circuits against voltage overshoot and undershoot during power up and power down. The device provides an accurately controlled inrush current and features a wide input voltage range, with configurable output voltage ranging from 0.9V to 13.2V.

The main application fields for the device are Networking equipment, server blades, storage systems, high current computer I/O cards, avionics systems, as well Hot Swap applications.

The working principle for the ISL61853BCRZ-T is quite straightforward. The device features an integrated comparator, PWM switches and soft launch, configurable input current limit and current sense thresholds, and voltage margining. The device is capable of handling continuous operational currents up to 26A, and peak currents up to 45A.

The ISL61853BCRZ-T device senses when a voltage is present at its input port, and when detected, the device will send an enable signal to the PWM switch, allowing the Switch to open and start sourcing current to the load. Depending on the configured settings, the PWM switch can start to source current gradually, providing soft launch of the load voltage. The device senses both output and input voltages, allowing for overshoot and undershoot protection for both the power source and the load.

Operation of the device can be further configured by setting slew rate and current limit thresholds, via I2C serial port or hardware pins. The slew rate defines the rise-and-fall time of the current sourced from the PWM switch, while the current limit thresholds control the lower and upper limits of the output current during a normal operation, providing protection against short circuits and heavy loads.

The ISL61853BCRZ-T Hot Swap Controller is certified for operation up to the industrial temperature range of -40°C and +85°C. The device is designed to fit the industrial 50V to 100V power input ranges, and it is available in a low profile, exposed pad QFN40 package, suitable for the most space constrained applications.
