The robust protection on the ISL61853LCRZ-T is designed to protect the device, the system and the load from common failure conditions, such as input under voltage (UV) , over voltage (OV)/surge, reverse-battery, overcurrent and overtemperature. It also provides built-in soft-start and current limit to avoid inrush current to the system and load.

Working principle
The principle of operation of the ISL61853LCRZ-T is as follows: When the UVP (Under Voltage Protection) is detected, the MOSFET controlling the power is disabled. If the input voltage is above the OVP (Over Voltage Protection) threshold, the MOSFET is disabled and the MOSFET drains current away from the load. When the input voltage is in the normal range (between the UVP and OVP thresholds), the Hot Swap Controller enables the MOSFET to connect the load to the system. If the current exceeds the over current protection (OCP) threshold, the MOSFET is disabled and the load is disconnected from the system.
The ISL61853LCRZ-T is designed to ensure that the power-up sequency is robust and reliable. It provides an adjustable soft-start for load limiting and an adjustable current limit to ensure correct power-up sequencing and to keep inrush current to the system and load within safe limits. It also provides a latch-off circuit that prevents the MOSFET from being turned on until the input voltage has stabilized after a power-down event. After the input voltage is stabilized, the MOSFET can be turned on again.
In the event of an overtemperature condition, the ISL61853LCRZ-T provides thermal fold back, reducing the duty cycle of the MOSFET. This helps to reduce the power dissipation in the MOSFET, thus preventing the MOSFET from becoming damaged due to excessive power dissipation.
