The ISL6841IBZ-T is an advanced digital multi-phase synchronous buck voltage regulator controller with integrated dual-notch DCAP modulators. This PMIC controller is designed for high-dense, high-current applications such as Intel Ultrabooks and other Ultrathin Computing platforms. The ISL6841IBZ-T features two phase-doubled synchronous buck converters which are capable of delivering continuous current up to 25A per phase with high-efficiency up to 95% over full load range. It also provides multi-phase current spreading which effectively reduces thermal hot-spot peak temperatures.

The ISL6841IBZ-T has several unique features which make it suitable for the most challenging circuit designs: integrated dual-notch DCAP modulators for ultra-fast transient response, extreme low-ripple operation for optimal regulation, advanced PMBus configuration and telemetry for critical system monitoring and control, and adjustable switching frequency for minimizing output noise.

The ISL6841IBZ-T includes all the necessary control, protection and safety functions by which system designers can efficiently achieve the desired output performance. The integrated protection functions include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, Vin under-voltage protection and overvoltage protection.

ISL6841IBZ-T works on the principle of developing an internal digital controlled impedance across the output of the buck regulator. This impedance is known as DCAP and is used to dynamically adjust the output voltage and reduce component count by eliminating the need for external loop compensation components. By using the two integrated independent DCAPs, the output voltage can be kept precisely regulated across a wide range of load and temperature conditions.

The ISL6841IBZ-T will control the power stage through the usage of a synchronous buck controller. The controller acts as an interface between the DC Bus voltage, the output voltage and the inductor current. In a buck converter, the inductor current ramps up during the "on" period and discharges during the "off" period. This periodic variation in the inductor current generates ripple in the output voltage. The voltage is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of the FEDET signal. This signal is regulated by adjusting the magnitude and duration of the on period.

When the output voltage is outside the pre-programmed voltage range, the ISL6841IBZ-T will use its PWM controller to control the synchronous power stage accordingly. The integrated DCAP will dynamically adjust the output voltage by adjusting the internal impedance of the buck converter. This adjustment is based on the slope of the inductor current and enables fast output voltage transient response and very low output voltage ripple. The controller also features a programmable slope compensation that can be used to optimize the filtering of the input voltage ripple and further improve the converters performance.
