JANS2N3440 Application Field and Working Principle
The JAN2N3440 is a single bipolar (BJT) NPN silicon transistor rated up to a maximum current of 100mA. It is designed for general-purpose amplifier and switches applications at collector currents from 10 µA to 100 mA.

Working Principle
BJTs are three-terminal semiconductor devices formed out of two p-n junctions which create two BJT active regions, the base-emitter junction and base-collector junction. Current applied to the base determines the amount of current allowed to flow through the collector-emitter region through electron and hole flow. However, due to the fact that the base region is very thin, the BJT relies on the transistor effect, which states that the current in the base-emitter junction is proportional to the current in the collector-emitter junction. This current then further amplifies the current through the BJT, leading to much larger current flowing through the collector region than the current flowing through the base.
In the JAN2N3440, the base and collector regions are connected in electrons, where the base works as a control electrode, usually receiving the signal from an external source. In the active region, electrons will pass from the collector region to the emitter region, while holes will pass from the emitter to the collector region.
