Power Factor Correction (PFC) is the process of improving the power factor of electrical systems so as to minimize electrical losses and minimize the amount of electricity consumed. The L6564TD PFC device is designed to provide power factor correction for electronic loads up to 400W from a standard 120V or 230V AC power supply. It is a single stage PFC controller that provides a highly efficient power factor correction, reducing the electromagnetic interference and total harmonic distortion.
The complete system requires the PFC controller plus a power MOSFET. The L6564TD PFC controller is a fully integrated IC with an error amplifier, oscillator, gate driver and protection circuits such as overvoltage and undervoltage boost controllers. The oscillator generates a triangle wave and the error amplifier compares it against a user set reference voltage. The L6564TD then drives the PFC power MOSFET to ensure a unity power factor. It uses a unique current sensing technique to deliver excellent dynamic behavior of the power Factor. The L6564TD is available in a 10-lead, SOIC package.
The application field of L6564TD PFC device includes battery chargers, telecom power, adaptors for PCs, set-top boxes, LCD monitors, etc. It is designed for use with AC mains input between 90 and 264V AC. The maximum continuous output power is up to 400 W, when used with a suitable power MOSFET.
The L6564TD PFC controller works on the principle of rectifying the AC voltage coming in from the mains and converting it into a DC voltage. First, the AC voltage is rectified and a low pass filter is used to remove the high frequency component and produce a DC output. This DC voltage then acts as the reference voltage for the error amplifier, which compares it with the triangle wave generated from the oscillator. The output of the error amplifier then drives the PFC power MOSFET to provide an efficient power factor correction.
The L6564TD PFC component is an ideal solution for applications that require a high efficiency, low power solution for power factor correction.
