The STMicroelectronics L6563TR is an advanced peak current mode controller designed for limited power factor correction (PFC) applications, including SMPSs with synchronous rectification. The device is designed to operate in any application that requires AC/DC power conversion. It features an integrated galvanically-isolated TRIAC dimming controller, a comparison voltage generator, and a fault protection system.
The primary application of the L6563TR is in the majority of power supplies that require PFC such as switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) for X-ray and medical systems, broad band power amplifiers, power supplies for industrial applications, lighting ballast controllers and smart power systems. The L6563TR contains an innovative pulse-width demodulation (PWD) technique for measuring the voltage at the rectifier bridge, providing for an enhanced steady-state accuracy.
The L6563TR\'s operating principle is based on its current loop system. The internal error amplifier compares the average output voltage of the power supply to the reference voltage, then outputs a current to the primary side of the power transformer. The magnitude of the current is proportional to the error voltage and adjusts the PFC converter output voltage to the desired level. Furthermore, the controller derives two reference of half rectified full wave voltage waveforms, referenced to the AC line, to generate two monotonically decreasing current references that can drive it and ensure proper operating conditions are met. This current reference is compared with the current cmd and the difference is amplified by VAC. The output of the current loop is the command signal VQ which is compared to the voltage AQ to generate the starting angle θ of the synchronous rectification cycle.
The TRIAC dimming controller enables smooth dimming control and current-source driving of the TRIAC. The dimming controller can detect the TRIAC turn-on instant with better accuracy than traditional zero-crossing circuits. The maximum conduction current through the TRIAC is limited to achieve a soft dimming effect from the TRIAC
