PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a power management circuit that is used to regulate the supply of power to electronic components. PFC (Power Factor Correction) is a particular type of power management in which the output voltage is adjusted or corrected. The L6561 is a high power factor controller IC with adjustable line and load regulation. It is designed to drive high current buck or boost converters or combined buck-boost converters.

The L6561 uses a switch mode power supply design, and consists of two major components – the power factor correction (PFC) section and the main regulator. The main regulator is made up of an adjustable re-driver, an adjustable hysteretic pre-regulator, and an auxiliary voltage regulator. The PFC section is made up of the active pre-regulator, phase control loop, and the current regulator.

The PFC section of the L6561 works by automatically correcting the power factor of the incoming power supply as it is converted to a regulated DC voltage. The active pre-regulator cycles the power switch on and off to draw a sinusoidal current waveform from the incoming AC line. The current waveform is then compared with the reference triangle waveform, and the error generated is used to adjust the duty cycle of the power switch. This ensures that the power factor of the output voltage is always close to unity.]

The main regulator of the L6561 is designed for optimal electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance and precise line and load regulation. The adjustable re-driver converts the output voltage of the active pre-regulator into an adjustable DC voltage, which is then further adjusted by the adjustable hysteretic pre-regulator. The resulting DC voltage is then further regulated by an auxiliary voltage regulator which provides precise voltage regulation over the full range of input and output voltages. This combination of regulators provides precise line and load regulation under a wide range of input conditions.

The L6561 has a variety of applications, such as LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting; DC motor drives and controls; industrial, automotive, and medical electronic power supplies, and other applications that require high power factor and precision voltage regulation. The L6561 can also be used in combination with other power components to create a true on-board or modular power supply.
