The LIS2DS12USTR, a miniature, low-power, 3-axis digital accelerometer, belongs to the motion sensors - accelerometers category. At only 2.2mmx2.2mmx0.45mm case size with 0.2mm pitch, the LIS2DS12USTR delivers excellent ultra-low power performance for those applications which require minimal intrusion. Equipped with a high-speed SPI serial interface, this motion sensor is suitable for most portable and wearable applications.

Created with a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology, the LIS2DS12USTR operates on a voltage supply between 1.7V to 3.6V. The digital output of the accelerometer is proportional to the static acceleration related to the sensitive axes of the sensor based on the physical phenomenon known as the Newton’s Second Law of Motion. The output is a numerical representation of applied acceleration and can be presented in a variety of formats such as 14-bit 2’s complement, 8-bit unsigned, 8-bit signed, 16-bit 2’s complement indicating the acceleration vector magnitude, acceleration vector direction, or tilt angle.

The LIS2DS12USTR is capable of measuring accelerations with output data rates ranging from 0.781Hz to 52Hz, measuring up to ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, or ±16g. With its embedded FIFO, users are free to set up their own sampling rates from the internal data rates of 6.25Hz, 12.5Hz, 25Hz, 50, 100Hz, and 200Hz. Of course, the accelerometer’s Self-test is another feature it provides which eases the verification process of internal circuitry functionality.

The array of features accompanied by low power consumption that living up to the name of the “ultra-low power”, LIS2DS12USTR is ideal for many application fields, such as mobile phones, industrial handheld devices, toys, and sports & health watches. Healthcare-wise, due to its small size, ultra-low power consumption, it is suitable for patient motion monitoring, fall detection, and alarms.

In industrial automation, the motion-detection capability of the sensor suits in control systems, security, and environmental monitoring applications such as predictive maintenance, lift systems, inertial navigation, and seismic monitoring. Last but not least, in the portable device market, GPSs can benefit from this MEMS accelerometer as the vibration isolation and dead-reckoning functions are enabled when the GPS loses track of the weak satellite signal.
