The LIS2L02AQ motion sensor is an integrated accelerometer designed for the measurement of acceleration and motion in a variety of applications. This type of motion sensor is commonly referred to as an accelerometer, and is used to accurately measure and detect the acceleration of an object. The LIS2L02AQ uses a MEMS micro-machined vibrating beam structure to measure linear acceleration in a range of +/-2g with an embedded 16-bit digital resolution A/D converter.
The LIS2L02AQ’s small package size, low power consumption, and high resolution make it an ideal choice for cost-effective motion sensing solutions. It is commonly used in automotive, aerospace, medical, consumer, and industrial applications for detection and monitoring of vibration, shock, tilt, inclined angle measurement, and stability.
The working principle behind the LIS2L02AQ is based on the MEMS or Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems technology. A MEMS-based accelerometer consists of a single- or multi-axis element which consists of a mass (or proof mass) that is suspended on a microscopic frame. When the acceleration of an object changes, the proof mass is displaced due to the inertia of the suspended mass. This displacement of the proof mass then causes a change in resistance across the device, which is measured and converted to an electrical signal that can be used for further processing.
The LIS2L02AQ uses a thermal-blind, low-power, thermally compensated process to improve the dynamic range and accuracy of the device. It also comes with two onboard temperature sensors for monitoring internal temperature changes as well as an embedded digital temperature sensor for calculating Self-Test temperature compensation coefficients.
The design of the LIS2L02AQ is optimised for reduced power, low noise, and wide temperature range. Advanced Active-Mode power saving operational modes offers up to five times lower power consumption when compared to other MEMS based accelerometer solutions. Additional protection features such as embedded over-temperature protection, over-voltage protection, and single/dual-axis sensing modes ensures the integrity and reliability in applications where it may be exposed to harsh operating conditions.
