An accelerometer measures acceleration forces. These forces may be static, like the continuous force of gravity or they could be dynamic, caused by moving or vibrating the accelerometer. The LIS2HH12TR is an example of a motion sensor - an accelerometer that measures dynamic acceleration forces, with a full scale range of ±2, ±4, ±8 and ±16 g and a sampling rate of up to 12.5 KHz. The working principle of the LIS2HH12TR is straightforward. The inertial probes inside, which are driven by the acceleration, resonate due to the vibrations received. This vibration creates a vector-sum of the accelerations which acts on the piezoelectric silicon monolith, generating an alternating electrical charge proportional to the acceleration. This electrical signal is then conditioned and converted by the integrated analog to digital converter to allow it to be low-pass filtered, processed, and used to generate motion features.

The LIS2HH12TR has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and extended life. It is also capable of measuring ultra low frequencies, making it suitable for low frequency vibration monitoring applications, including fatigue testing. It includes a built-in power-on reset (POR) circuit and readout of the acceleration threshold, making it suitable for a number of motion detection and movement alarm applications.
