The LM3622MX-4.1 is a single-cell Lithium-ion battery charger that combines constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) control, a safety timer, and charge status indication. It is a highly integrated battery charger combo controller for single-cell Li-ion, Li-polymer and Li-FePO4 batteries that has been designed to meet all the requirements of various portable devices such as cell phones, PDAs, PDAs, digital cameras and digital audio players. The LM3622MX-4.1 provides built-in reverse current protection, overvoltage protection and over-temperature protection. It also ensures automatic power-down when the battery is fully charged. The LM3622MX-4.1 is available in a 32-Lead Thin QFN with 4x4x0.8(mm).

Application Field

The LM3622MX-4.1 operates from an input voltage range of 3.5V to 9V. It is designed to provide maximum flexibility for universal charging of different types of single-cell Li-ion batteries. It supports both high voltage and low voltage charging for 3.7V, 4.2V and 4.35V batteries. The charger has been optimized for the USB battery charging specification (BC1.2) for DCP, CDP, and SDP. It is particularly well suited for small portable applications such as cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and digital audio players.

Working Principle

The LM3622MX-4.1 supports two types of charging algorithm: Regular CC/CV and Fast CC/CV charging. The charging algorithm is selected using the EN1 pin. A low on EN1 selects Regular CC/CV and a high on EN1 selects Fast CC/CV. In both modes the LM3622MX-4.1 automatically terminates the charge cycle when the battery is full.

In Regular CC/CV mode, the LM3622MX-4.1 operates at a constant current of 4A and maintains a constant voltage until the current reduces to 0.2A. When the current drops to 0.2A, the charger enters the CV stage. The CV voltage is set to the float voltage of the battery. The regular CC/CV mode is suitable for charging slow self-discharge lithium-ion batteries.

In Fast CC/CV mode, the LM3622MX-4.1 operates at a constant current of 4A and maintains a constant voltage until the current reduces to 1A. When the current drops to 1A, the charge enters the CV stage and the voltage is set to the float voltage of the battery. The Fast CC/CV mode is suitable for charging high rate self-discharge lithium-ion batteries.

The LM3622MX-4.1 also provides an I2C interface for communication between the master and slave devices. The I2C interface is used to provide real-time status of the charger such as voltage, current, and charge status. The charger can be adjusted using the I2C interface to change parameters such as the charging current, termination current, and float voltage. The I2C interface also allows the master device to disable the charger, reset the charger, and read diagnostic information from the charger.

In addition, the LM3622MX-4.1 provides a safety timer to protect the battery from overcharging. Once the safety timer has expired, the charge is automatically disabled and the status of the charge is indicated on the STAT1 andSTAT2 pins.
