LM5068MM-1/NOPB PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers Application Field and Working Principle

The LM5068MM-1/NOPB PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers are used to protect electronic systems during power up or power down events or when a faulty or unstable supply is encountered. The device senses the presence and magnitude of input power and automatically switches power MOSFETs off to remove input power in an over voltage/under voltage event. The device monitors the in-rush current and controls its rate of rise, limiting it to a safe level.

Functionality

The LM5068MM-1/NOPB PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers offers three common features. The first is OVP - Over Voltage Protection. This feature protects sensitive components from inrush currents, overvoltage transients, and/or sustained overvoltage conditions. The second feature is UVP - Under Voltage Protection. This feature protects the device from abnormal load transients or load reduction that may occur when the supply voltage falls below a set level. The third feature is ILS - Inrush Limiting and Soft Startup. This feature provides accurate inrush current limiting, low turn-on overshoot on the output voltage, and extends system startup time.

Working Principle

With the help of LM5068MM-1/NOPB PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers three stages is completing the process. The first stage is Startup and Set-up which applies the power to the load side. The second stage is Voltage Monitoring and Design Protection which ensures that the applied power is within the expected conditions as specified by the design and utilizing an Over Voltage Protection (OVP) and Under Voltage Protection (UVP) circuits. Finally, the third stage is Current Limit and Fault Detection, which uses a Current Sense circuit to detect the amount of current flowing through the load and limits it to prevent overloads.

The LM5068MM-1/NOPB device has two sense inputs - OVP and UVP - that are used to monitor the input voltage. When the input voltage exceeds the OVP threshold, the Power MOSFETs are turned off to protect the electronics from damage due to excessive voltage. Similarly, when the input voltage drops below the UVP threshold, the Power MOSFETs are also turned off to protect the electronics from damage due to insufficient voltage.

In order to prevent overcurrent faults, the device includes an Inrush Current Limit (ILS) circuit. This circuit limits the inrush current, allowing the user to limit the magnitude of the current spikes and to distribute the inrush current over a longer period of time. It also provides a Soft Start circuit that limits the rate of rise in the current, preventing sudden voltage transients.
