PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The LM5069MM-2/NOPB is a high-performance Hot Swap controller which offers a wide range of capabilities under varying system environments. It provides fast and reliable protection against inrush currents and enables the system to remain continuously powered via a power source of any size. This Hot Swap controller has been designed for use in a variety of applications, including medical, industrial, consumer, and automotive systems.

This Hot Swap controller contains a dual-channel MOSFET driver, an open-drain pre-driver and a fault-protector circuit. The MOSFET driver switches a pair of low-side MOSFETs that are connected to one of two power sources. The open-drain pre-driver controls the gate voltage of the low-side MOSFETs by sensing their drain voltage. The fault-protector circuit monitors the conditions of both the hot-swap enable and the enable-output pins.

In addition, the power source sequencing uses the enable-output pin to provide control of one or two power sources, depending on system requirements. The power-down sequence provides fault protection by preventing MOSFET damage and ensuring that all output pins are disabled when the hot-swap enable is disabled. Furthermore, the active-discharge function allows the low-side MOSFETs to be deactivated quickly and reliably before the high-side MOSFETs are deactivated.

The LM5069MM-2/NOPB Hot Swap controller also includes a number of operational features, such as a power monitor time-out timer and flag. The time-out timer is used to prevent latch-up due to current draw in excess of the power source rating for a specified time period. The flag indicates when the time-out timer has timed out. This Hot Swap controller also includes an over-current detect circuit to detect and latch-up by a predetermined current flow.

Furthermore, the LM5069MM-2/NOPB Hot Swap controller features an inrush limit circuit to reduce the inrush current, and a thermal protection circuit to guard against an excessive junction temperature. The thermal protection circuit is designed to accelerate the turn-off of the low-side MOSFETs if the junction temperature reaches a pre-determined threshold.

In addition, the LM5069MM-2/NOPB Hot Swap controller includes a current-sense amplifier which provides an output signal proportional to the current flow. This amplifier can be used to quantify the current during a power-up condition, improving system efficiency and reliability. Furthermore, the current-sense amplifier can be used to detect current overload and provide thermal protection, as well as other features such as soft-start and reverse-voltage protection.
