MAX1501ETE+T is a physical packaging of a highly integrated, low-noise, fast-charging battery charger that is designed to support primary batteries, such as alkaline and NiMH. It is optimized to work with two or three cell battery packs, providing efficient and complete charging. MAX1501ETE+T battery charger features a single stage charge algorithm, 3 LEDs and 2 momentary push buttons that enable a wide range of user interface options.
MAX1501ETE+T falls under the category of PMIC - Battery Chargers, which are devices designed to monitor and control the charging of a battery, including Nickel-cadmium (NiCad), Nickel-metal Hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (LiOn). The working principle of the MAX1501ETE+T is based on a linear charger which consists of built-in voltage reference, comparators and a charge current amplifier for loop control. Once the battery is connected, the charger will induce charge current into the battery through its primary control terminal, the battery voltage pin. The control loop of the charger is kept open until the battery voltage is measured to be equal or above the set voltage of 4.1V. At this point, the charger goes into the full charge mode, with the battery current reducing until a C/10 value is reached, after which the battery is considered fully charged.
The MAX1501ETE+T features a 3 step charging cycle with pre-charge current to reduce worse case stress on sleeping cells, a constant current circuit the maintains the charge current at a set level, and then a constant voltage circuit that holds the voltage to the cut-off level until the final charge current reaches C/10 of the charge current.
The other features of the MAX1501ETE+T include thermal protection that automatically shuts off the charge current in the case of device over-temperature, short-circuit protection that shuts off the charge current when the battery is shorted, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression to help reduce radio frequency (RF) noise generated by the charger.
The MAX1501ETE+T is suitable for a wide range of applications, including portable battery powered devices, notebook computers, mobile phones, digital cameras and camcorders, as well as industrial and medical equipment. With its small size, fast charging and low-noise operation, the MAX1501ETE+T makes a great choice for quick-charging designs.
