Introduction

MAX1641EEE+T is a higher power battery chargerFamily of Maxim Integrated’s Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) solutions. It consists of a power switchingcontroller and power FET that controls the current in the charging/discharging cycle of Li-Ion/Li-Polymer/NiMH/NiCd batteries. The charger supports direct charging from a wall adapter, USB charging port, or a stand-alone charger. The device is suitable for use in mobilephone, tablet, andappliancechargerapplications.

Working Principle

The MAX1641EEE+T PMIC charger is designed to run a charging cycle when powered with an AC orDC adapter, or a stand-alone charger. The charger measures thevoltage of the battery and compares it to the voltage set by a user-defined threshold. When the voltage islesser than this threshold, and thecharger is powered up, the charging cycle is initiated. The charging cycle consists of an initial induction current, constant voltage and a termination charge. The initial induction current is responsible for bringing the battery up to the desiredvoltage before continuing the charging cycle. The charger then charges the battery at a constant voltage, untilthe current begins to increase and the voltage eventually begins to decline. Once the decline reaches a specified level, the charger terminates the charge, andsets the charging status to the full chargevoltage.The Constant Voltage phase may run for some time, as it depends on the capacity ofthe battery beingcharged. Additionally, thechargermonitors the battery temperature anddisables charging if the temperature is out of range. Thecharger also disables the electronic circuit when an overcurrent or overriding occurs.
