MAX1641EEE+ are powerful general-purpose power management integrated circuits (PMICs) becoming increasingly popular in battery charger applications. The MAX1641EEE+ is capable of providing up to two 2-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer (Li-Po) charger output channels. It is also suitable for NiMH/NiCd, lead acid, and other chemistries. Possessing high level of integration, the MAX1641EEE+ enables designers to use a simple and low cost design solution.

Features of MAX1641EEE+

The MAX1641EEE+ offers some leading features of PMIC - Battery Chargers. It supports wide range input voltage from 4.5v to 18v and regulates up to 6A charge current with very low voltage ripple. It incorporates an impressive range of safety features, with effective protection against short-circuit, open-circuit, over-temperature, over-voltage, and overcharge conditions. It also offers very low quiescent current in the range of 2μA in shutdown mode, which enables longer battery life.

Working Principle of MAX1641EEE+

The MAX1641EEE+ includes two output channels that are each capable of regulating up to 3A current. Both channels can be independently enabled. They each have their own external N-channel MOSFETs and sensing circuitry. The regulation voltage is set using an external resistor divider, and the current threshold is set using a single external resistor. The MAX1641EEE+ also includes under voltage lock-out and thermal shut-down protection.

In operation, at high line voltages, the MAX1641EEE+ will enter constant-current (CC) mode. During CC mode, the output current is regulated to the set threshold value. Once the voltage reaches the regulated voltage, the MAX1641EEE+ enters constant-voltage (CV) mode for precision voltage regulation. The MAX1641EEE+ self-adjusts iteration time to ensure that the charger does not exceed the regulated voltage. In addition, the MAX1641EEE+ provides charge termination and fast-charge input logic that are used to enable fast-charge operation mode. In this mode, the charger will charge at maximum current until the charge termination signal is issued.
