The MAX1667EAP is a Battery Charge Management and Switching Power System IC from Maxim Integrated. It provides charge and switch control to manage the charging of Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery packs. The device includes an active-mode automatic charge current and switch current limitation, enabling the design of charger systems with high power efficiency and excellent line regulation.

The MAX1667EAP is specifically designed for application in the battery power management and switch control. It integrates several components typically included in battery charge management and switch control applications including voltage detection, active-mode current limitation, switch control, and power switching.

The MAX1667EAP provides active-mode, low-side current-limit and switch control. The device contains three voltage detection circuits, two adjustable current sources, and two high-side switches. The current-limit protection features provide the required over-current protection when the battery is charged or discharged. Additionally, the MAX1667EAP contains a power switch to control the FETs and a temperature sensor to detect the temperature of the battery cell.

The MAX1667EAP battery charger is available in two versions, the MAX1667EAP-A and MAX1667EAP-B, with different parameters and switch current limitation. The MAX1667EAP-A provides up to 1.8A of switch current limit and up to 6.5A of charge current limit. The MAX1667EAP-B provides up to 3.2A of switch current limit and up to 12.5A of charge current limit. Both versions have adjustable switching and charging thresholds with manual shutdown.

The MAX1667EAP includes a low feedback loop for current control to achieve a high power efficiency. It uses an on-chip voltage sensing circuit with an internal reference voltage to detect battery voltage, and an on-chip comparator to detect the battery current. The current-limit parameters are programmed by setting two analog voltage differences. The threshold voltages are used to adjust the current limit as well as the power switch control.

The MAX1667EAP is designed to be robust and safe in battery applications. It features an internal current sense and switch control circuitry, which can be used to shutdown the charge if the battery temperature exceeds a certain threshold. It also features over-current protections for the power switch, including current foldback and over-voltage protection.
