The MAX1679EUA+ is an integrated low-dropout (LDO) regulator and high-efficiency switching battery charger with selectable high-voltage (HV) inputs ideal for portable applications. The single package solution saves board space and requires very few external components. The MAX1679EUA+ is the ideal choice to power a broad range of portable mobile accessories.
The MAX1679EUA+’s LDO output and battery charger input is powered from a single high-voltage (HV) input source. The output from the LDO is adjustable from 2.5V to 5.5V, with 40mV typical and 160mV maximum dropout when sourcing 1A from a 15V input. The adjustable LDO is optimized for low quiescent current, making it ideal for space-constrained applications such as portable electronics and handheld devices.
The battery charger controller can switch between two input voltage sources and can charge any type of battery chemistry, including lithium ion (Li-Ion) and nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH). The charger can charge the battery at either constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) modes, allowing a wide range of batteries to be charged safely and accurately. An integrated current monitor allows the device to detect when the battery is connected and automatically switch between CV and CC modes. It also features over-voltage and temperature protection, auto-restart, and power-fault protection to ensure a safe and reliable battery charging process.
The MAX1679EUA+ supports an I2C-compatible interface to program and monitor the input source selection, charging current and charging voltage levels, as well as to monitor real-time input voltage and current, battery voltage and temperature. It also has two programmable dedicated I/O pins that can be used to monitor or control system events or peripherals.
