The MAX320CSA+ is a high-speed CMOS analog multiplexer/demultiplexer designed for full Duplex and PAUSE functions in Ethernets and otherwNetwork Interface Cards (NICs). It has a high accuracy differential mode connected to the physical layer, making it suitable for use as a communication interface to various network protocols such as Ethernet, Token Ring, and ATM. The MAX320CSA+ is capable of providing low-noise data conversion between semi-isolated serial and parallel broadcast channels, providing dynamic switching for voice and data transmission.

The MAX320CSA+ application field and working principle involve analog switching, multiplexing, and demultiplexing. This IC device provides a physical layer interface between system components, such as Ethernet and Token Ring, and the physical layer of the network. It can provide the required data rate and differential drive isolation between two segments of a network. The MAX320CSA+ accepts eight selectable inputs, each having a differential signal. This bidirectional communication is achieved by toggling the switch line along either the input or output direction of the system.

The working principle behind the MAX320CSA+ is based on voltage control. The analog multiplexer/demultiplexer is designed to accept eight selectable inputs, each having a differential signal. These selected signals are connected to five output channels that are driven by a differential signal via a separate differential drive circuit into the Ethernet physical layer. The differential drive output is adjustable, which allows the MAX320CSA+ to meet the data rate and differential drive isolation requirements of the network.

The MAX320CSA+ provides low-noise data conversion between semi-isolated serial and parallel broadcast channels, providing dynamic switching for voice and data transmission. It also has a sleep/wakeup feature which requires a single-point toggle to go between the two modes. This eliminates the need for synchronization circuits, which helps reduce complexity, power consumption and cost. The device also supports up to 4×4 bi-directional data transmission and can be used in the latest network equipment with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, token ring, and ATM.
